Condottiere is rapidly becoming one of my favourite games!
I’ve played it three times now, all were four player games, and the variety and tension produced by the game is really great. The competition is high, but conflict is quite nicely indirect, so it should have a wide appeal.
The map …
A game of conquest and domination in Renaissance Italy!
In Renaissance Italy, armies of mercenaries fought to conquer the broken city-states for the highest bidder.
Recreate this time as you, an elite Condottiere, strive to carve out your own kingdom! Using a unique deck of cards and a map of Italy, you must exploit the assets in your hand and thwart the traps set by your opponents. Your task is difficult, your mercenaries are unreliable, the Church may intervene, and you are surrounded by others who envy your position! This game is loaded with intrigue and subterfuge. To win, you must be both a clever diplomat and a daring general. Succeed at both, and you will triumph!
This game has a large deck of oblong cards and a fairly simple map of provinces in Renaissance Italy. The object of the game is to acquire four connected provinces. Game play is fairly simple as players use numbered cards to get the highest bid for a given territory.
Unlike standard auctions, in which only the highest bidder loses their bid to the “bank”, in Condottiere, every player loses their bid. Players are, in effect, bidding the number of troops they are willing to lose to win the territory. However, several special effect cards shake the contests up and keep the players guessing.
This updated version has a much smaller box, standard sized-cards, slightly tweaked rules, new card abilities and a lower price.
Box contains:
- 1 game board
- 110 cards
- 1 Condottiere token
- 1 Favor of the Pope token
- 36 control markers in 6 different colors
- 1 rulebook
